1st United States Lancer Regiment recruiting poster

Lancer Cavalry Regiment recruiting posterThis is a recruiting poster for the 1st United States Lancer Regiment, which Arthur Rankin, Member of Parliament for Essex, Canada West, attempted to put together.  It was a violation of the British Empire’s Foreign Enlistment Act for British subjects to enlist in another army; that didn’t stop British subjects from joining the Union army, but recruiting a regiment in Canada was something that the Empire couldn’t ignore.  Rankin was later arrested and had to resign from the Union army without his unit seeing service.
